At First Thought Independent School, we actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are embedded throughout our curriculum, daily routines, and relationships - helping every pupil to understand their rights and responsibilities as members of both our school and the wider community.
We recognise that many of our pupils have faced barriers to education and may find social understanding and community participation challenging. Through our tailored teaching, therapeutic support, and consistent modelling of positive behaviour, we help children to develop the social, moral, spiritual, and cultural awareness needed to thrive in modern Britain.
Pupils are encouraged to share their views and have their voices heard. We hold school meetings, pupil surveys, and class discussions where children help shape school life - from choosing topics and activities to developing school rules and celebrating achievements. Staff actively model listening, fairness, and shared decision-making in all interactions.
We teach pupils that rules and boundaries exist to keep everyone safe and happy. Our Behaviour and Relationships Policy and use of Zones of Regulation support pupils to understand right from wrong, explore consequences in a restorative way, and learn self-regulation and responsibility. Staff use consistent routines and positive reinforcement so that pupils experience fairness and predictability in their environment.
Within a supportive and structured framework, pupils are encouraged to make choices about their learning, friendships, and play. Our personalised curriculum and sensory approaches help pupils develop confidence to express their preferences, take safe risks, and explore new experiences. Staff celebrate individuality and promote each pupil’s independence at every stage of their development.
Respect is central to our school culture. Through daily practice, social skills work, and group learning, pupils learn to understand and appreciate difference - whether in opinions, communication styles, or abilities. Staff model respect in their language, tone, and relationships with pupils, families, and each other.
Through our PSHE for SEND and EQUALS “The World About Me” curriculum strands, pupils explore cultural celebrations, beliefs, and traditions from across the world. Visits, themed days, and community links help children experience diversity first-hand and understand that difference is something to be valued, not feared.
We believe promoting British values is not a standalone initiative, but part of who we are. By embedding these principles into every aspect of school life, we help our pupils to become kind, thoughtful, and responsible citizens - ready to contribute positively to their communities.
At First Thought Independent School, every child is valued, every voice is heard, and every thought counts.
