School Uniform

Encouraging belonging through comfort, choice and inclusion

At First Thought Independent School, we believe that wearing school uniform helps pupils to feel part of our community - promoting belonging, equality, and pride in the school.

However, we also recognise that for some of our pupils, traditional uniform may not always be comfortable or appropriate. Many of the children and young people we support have sensory, physical, or emotional regulation needs, and we know that clothing can have a significant impact on how calm, safe, and ready to learn they feel.

For that reason, school uniform is encouraged but not mandatory. We work closely with families to ensure that every child is dressed in a way that supports their comfort, independence, and dignity - while still helping them to feel part of the wider school community.

Our Recommended Uniform

Everyday Wear:

  • Navy blue school sweatshirt or cardigan with the First Thought Independent School logo (or plain equivalent)
  • White or light blue polo shirt
  • Grey or black trousers, joggers, shorts, or skirt
  • Plain black footwear (trainers or shoes – fastenings to suit individual needs)

Summer Option:

  • Light blue or navy gingham dress or shorts (optional)
  • Sunhat encouraged during warm weather

PE Kit:

  • Plain white or blue t-shirt
  • Black or navy shorts, leggings, or joggers
  • Trainers or pumps

Outdoor Learning:
Outdoor exploration is a key part of our curriculum. Pupils should have appropriate clothing for all weather:

  • Waterproof coat and wellies for wet days
  • Hat and gloves during colder months
  • Spare clothing for sensory or outdoor play

Logoed items are available from our chosen supplier, but plain equivalents from supermarkets or high-street stores are completely acceptable.

Purchasing Uniform

Our recommended uniform can be ordered from our approved supplier:

Plain alternatives may be purchased from any retailer. If families require financial support, second-hand items, or advice on suitable adaptations, please contact the school office.

Inclusivity and Flexibility

Our approach to uniform reflects our commitment to equality, accessibility and inclusion, as set out in our Equalities Policy and SEND & Inclusion Framework.

Where a pupil’s sensory profile, disability, cultural background, or personal needs mean that standard uniform is not suitable, we work collaboratively with parents and professionals to agree reasonable adjustments. This might include:

  • Softer or alternative fabrics
  • Adjusted fastenings or footwear
  • Sensory-friendly layering
  • Omission of certain items

No pupil will ever be treated differently because of what they wear.

Presentation and Practicality

We encourage pupils to take pride in their appearance and to wear clothing that is clean, safe, and suitable for learning and play.
To maintain safety and comfort:

  • Jewellery should be limited to stud earrings and watches.
  • Long hair should be tied back for practical activities.
  • Pupils should wear clothing suitable for movement, outdoor play, and sensory activities.

Sustainability and Community

We promote sustainability through our Uniform Exchange Scheme, allowing families to donate or collect pre-loved items free of charge. This supports both our environmental values and our community spirit.

To donate or request items, please contact admin@ftindependentschool.co.uk or speak to a member of the school office team.

A Uniform That Reflects Our Ethos

Our approach to school uniform is rooted in understanding, equality, and flexibility.
While we encourage pupils to wear the school colours as a sign of belonging, we will always prioritise comfort, wellbeing, and individuality.

At First Thought Independent School, what matters most is that every child feels confident, included, and ready to learn - in whatever they wear.

Because feeling safe and seen is the true uniform of learning.
